EMV is an acronym for Europay, MasterCard, & Visa and it represents the use of chip card technology in payment transactions. These cards may be called EMV cards, chip cards or smart cards.
When you use your chip card at a chip enabled terminal, the chip will generate a code that is unique to that individual transaction - it can't ever be used again. That makes stolen transaction data virtually useless to thieves that try to use the data to make counterfeit cards or purchases.
Cards will be reissued automatically according to the month of expiration. You will receive a letter notifying you prior to receiving your new card in the mail. Please read the letter carefully as important information is included. Once you receive you new smart chip card, your existing card will be disabled after 30 days or upon activation of your new chip card.
No, you will retain the same card number. The expiration date and 3-digit security code on the back will change though. That information will need to be relayed to any merchants with whom you have recurring payments.
You have the option of keeping your current PIN or establishing a new one. This is done by calling 1-800-992-3808 to activate your card.
You will need to insert your chip card into the reader (face up & chip side toward the terminal) and leave it in for the duration of the transaction. You will need to remember to remove the card after the transaction is complete. Some terminals will prompt you to remove your card.

You will insert your card into the ATM & follow the instructions on the screen. Depending upon the type of ATM, you may be prompted to reinsert your card. You will leave the card in the ATM until the transaction is complete & the card is released. You may be prompted to remove your card prior to receiving your cash.
Yes, chip cards will continue to have the magnetic stripe. This will ensure that customers can continue to pay until all merchants have upgraded their terminals to EMV.
Internet & phone transactions will be processed the same as they are with a magnetic stripe. EMV technology does not affect internet & phone transactions.
That will depend on the type of payment terminals the restaurant has. In many cases, the host/hostess will still need to take the card to be swiped. Some restaurants my have pay-at-the-table terminals where you can pay the bill right at the table.

While chip card won't prevent large-scale data breaches that have hit some merchants, they do make it extremely difficult to produce counterfeit cards from that stolen data.
Yes, once the chip card has been activated the old card will be disabled. You will need to contact merchants whom you have recurring payments with in order to update your card information (expiration date & 3-digit security code on the back of your new smart chip card, if applicable).
